Rove Lisboa

Curated by Federica Elena

For me, moving to Lisbon has meaning walking for a long time among the waves of the sea, breathing salt and getting used to seeing the gentle lines that make up the horizon. I wanted to understand and investigate what this contact with the coastline represented, create a narration in which sea lovers can relate and where they can find the characteristics of a common identity with an emotional approach.

Starting from this call of the Ocean we developed an exhibition journey that explored this topic by focusing on the Atlantic Ocean along the Portuguese coastline and islands; the country for which we are all fascinated, we feel the calling of the ocean here and we cannot resist. It is the reason we choose to experience life here, it marks our days, it is our prayer and our purification. It defines us and is present with us in daily life, through the air, in its sounds, in the light, in its never-ending, all-encompassing form.

Through a collective voice we combined multiple perspectives to restore and sensitize people to get in touch with this force and with themselves, to awaken their instincts, to wash themselves from everyday life, to regain possession of their anima, to purify all of us. We wanted to bring to light this intimate connection by inviting artists to speak about this relationship through their own reading and language of art, by articulating experiences, moments, feelings, histories, anecdotes and reflections.  With the mediums of installation, movement, voice, video, language, analog photography, painting and sculpture, we invited the community of Lisboa to immerse themselves in these works and expand the conversation of what it means for them to experience the Portuguese coastlines in the context of their own lives.  The Ocean has been a call to which a collective of 10 artists have responded to, with the language of various mediums.
