“Mechanical Animals" is a first performance inspired by the idea of a primal dance seeking liberation from an automated word. Is a performance staged in three fluid chapters about physical and spiritual liberation. It’s a break, a dichotomy. Is it a corporal search for liberation for the ever-narrowing mechanical word we have come to know today. We are living in an era of growing automation, where robotics, AI, and super computers exist to make our lives more efficient, precise and coordinated.
In the proposal developed by this performance, ambiguity emerges as the necessary counterpart to the understanding and measurability that exacting machines demand. The piece explores this dichotomy by invoking elements of nature and sounds, creating an interplay of tension and agreement, and embracing indeterminate profiles. By working with alternative forms of perception, the performance seeks to blur the contours of the real, challenging the audience to rethink their understanding of reality. Debating the possibility of a new possibility, the piece reinforces a concordance of opposites in which the dancers engage in a dialogue on an ambiguous plane. This space, where sounds, images, and movements coalesce and then potentiate in their absence, opens a realm of new promises and potentialities. The experience operates as a spiritual dialogue, brought to life through the act of audience perception. In this dynamic, the spectator becomes an integral conversation partner, one whose silence and receptive presence allow for a gentle yet profound communion with Nature. The performance thus invites the audience into an immersive experience, encouraging a deeper reflection on the evolving interplay between technology and the primal essence of human existence.
This piece is the result of a dedicated mashup between two artists: Natacha Campos, a dancer, actress, and freelance creator, and Rashad Becker, a composer, sound scientist, and mastering engineer at his own Studio Clunk. Their combined expertise and creativity have crafted a performance that not only questions our current reality but also offers a transformative experience through the synergy of movement and sound.
